German term

Studienveranstaltungen

German to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy
Appears in a confirmation of the academic achievements of an individual studying pedagogy/education.

The word appears as follows:

Sie hat an insgesamt 59 Studienveranstaltungen teilgenommen (davon mindestens
12 Veranstaltungen für das Hauptstudium).

Obviously, 'study events' is not going to make sense. Perhaps something like 'study units'? I've looked in countless dictionaries (online and off) and not found a reference, but I must also admit I don't have any specialist reference books for this field.

Discussion

Birgitt Olsen (asker) May 27, 2010:
Diana: Thanks for showing me this link, I found it very helpful!
British Diana May 24, 2010:
"Study in Bavaria" Birgitt's original idea "Units" might be right after all - I've just remembered that the other day I picked up a leaflet called (sic) "Study in Bavaria - A Student Guide to Higher Education in Bavaria" and here the author/translator (why are translaters always anonymous or in fact never even mentioned?) uses the word "unit" quite a bit.
You can see it as a file under www.study-in-bavaria.de
Kerstin Green May 24, 2010:
Just for clarification - a 'Studienveranstaltung' in this context is a course, any other 'events' such as tutorials etc. would be mentioned separately.

study modules

In this case it could be either courses or study modules, but I think study modules is the safest bet.

on top of this you choose two electives from the remaining range of study modules offered by Heidelberg International Business Academy such as e.g. fundraising-management / marketing & media interactions / managing service operations / 2nd foreign language etc.

In order to underscore the international nature of the Master's award, HIB is seeking validation from the Open University Validation Services, a process that has already been successfully undertaken for its Bachelor's programme. All courses in the Master's programme will be held in English. HIB is an associate institution of the Open University and once validation is in place, you will be able to earn an internationally recognised Master's degree from the largest university in Great Britain.

Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : I think modules could last months or even years, which is too long for "Veranstaltungen"
1 hr
agree J Fox : I used to write training modules, which made up courses. Each module was around 4 to 24 hours of study, although they could of course be a lot longer

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you, Kim. For my text, 'study modules' or 'study units' really did work best. Thanks also to JFox for his/her information. Kim, I always appreciate your references -- very helpful -- and I have esp. benefitted from Tinyurl. :-)"

neutral SMueller : Veranst. could also be course, tutorial, field study, lecture, workshop... - I guess a generic term is needed...

agree philgoddard : If you Google it, it usually refers to short-term periods of study lasting hours or days.

courses

just sounds right to me !
Note from asker:
Thank you all. I think that 'courses' would be an appropriate translation in some contexts. However, in my text it would have clashed with other usages of 'course'. So I chose Kim's answer for this particular instance.

or: program(me)s of study

...could be an equivalent generic term, IMO.
