aula matinal

I have seen the glossary entry, but I'm not entirely happy with it, so I'm posting the term again. The afternoon session, which my late wife used to work on, was known as "late waiting" at her school, and I think they called it something like "preschool supervision"in the mornings. It's probably described differently in different locations and schools, so I'm interested in hearing more opinions, particularly regarding the morning session.

"El aula matinal es un servicio que el centro ofrece a todo el alumnado con objeto de ayudar a las familias cuyo horario laboral coincide con el de su hijo/a. Dentro de ésta los niños/as están al cargo de dos monitoras que complementan la labor educativa ANTES DE LA JORNADA ESCOLAR." (my capitals)

Discussion

Marcelo González May 18, 2017:
@Neil I guess that was back in the pre-Twitter age, when parents couldn't (so easily and publicly) ask for more and 'shame' schools into changing their policies and providing (much-needed) additional services.
neilmac (asker) May 18, 2017:
Waffle indeed At the school my wife worked at, acknowledged as one of Glasgow's finest (and feepaying to boot), they were actively discouraged from allowing these early bird children into the school building before 9 AM, except in the harshest of weather conditions, so you basically had kids running around outdoors in sub zero temperatures for several months of the year at the crack of dawn most days...
Charles Davis May 18, 2017:

So drawing pictures and watching videos, basically. "Personal debidamente cualificado en aptitud y valores"; "estilo humano individualizado". This is waffle. It just means being nice to them. It certainly doesn't sound like actual teaching. "Aula" doesn't imply that. It's a kind of creche.
neilmac (asker) May 18, 2017:
Interesting discussion I've decided to ask the author if their "aula matinal" includes breakfast, in which case I'll call it "breakfast club". If not, I'm considering "morning preschool supervision room"... Thanks for the input so far people, I really appreciate it.
Marie Wilson May 18, 2017:
My sons have all been through the Spanish school system and the Aula Matinal in their school was mainly to accommodate the families of seasonal strawberry pickers, who start work so early. It's just a place to supervise children whose parents are working. Many bilingual schools in Spain call it "Breakfast Club".
Simon Bruni May 18, 2017:
@ Ellen "dos monitoras que complementan la labor educativa ANTES DE LA JORNADA ESCOLAR"

That sounds just like "pre-school club" to me. It's not "teaching" exactly, though it may involve some fun educational activities.
Ellen Kraus May 18, 2017:
but it is a specific Service for the School children designed to make teaching (in the morning) coincide with their parents´work. i dont think of any pre-school activities or breakfast. Aula matinal to my thinking is nothing else but a simultaneous start of teaching on the one hand and parental work on the other.
Marie Wilson May 18, 2017:
Have you thought of Breakfast Club? Apart from a film I think it exists.

I think this would be a natural-sounding option in this context, where (as Simon suggests in Discussion) playful learning may take place, even if 'teaching' (by certified teachers) does not.

Another option would be early morning supervision/supervised care.

As others have pointed out, it's not an early morning 'session' (o 'tanda matutina' en español), as it's not a regular (full) session. It's simply a service that allows for children dropped-off early to be cared for and perhaps entertained with an educational game or two before regular instruction begins.

I hope this helps :-)

pre-school/breakfast club

This is what it's usually called in the UK, whether or not you choose "breakfast" will depend on whether they, er, eat breakfast at the school.
Note from asker:
I sort of had the same reservations pre-school, as the article will be read by an international audience. May go with breakfast club...

agree James A. Walsh : I'd go with "pre-school" since it doesn't mention food.

neutral Marcelo González : Wouldn't 'pre-school' lend itself to confusion? Wouldn't the service potentially be for all students (first, second, third graders, etc)? As for 'breakfast club', since it doesn't mention food (as James points out) this may not be the clearest option.

It's very clear to a British person because it's how we refer to this service. Within context, I don't think a British reader would confuse it with "preschool age" education.
agree Helena Chavarria : I googled 'school + 8.00am + uk' and 'Breakfast Club' seems to be used the most.

Early morning (school) session

That's what they called it in my days "Jornada Matutuna".
Peer comment(s):

neutral Marcelo González : It's not really a 'session' o 'jornada' (o tanda) matutina, but rather a sort of courtesy service that allows for 'early drop-off''...
