Conservaduría del Registro Civil de

Estoy traduciendo al inglés una traducción hecha del árabe al español de una partida de nacimiento siria. La traducción va para los Estados Unidos.

El encabezado dice:

"República Árabe Siria
Ministerio del Interior
Dirección General del Estado Civil
**Conservaduría del Registro Civil de** [en blanco]"

Más adelante hablan del Conservador del Registro Civil.

¿La traducción sería algo tan sencillo como "Office of Vital Records" o "Civil Registry Office" o se traduce de otra manera?

@ AllegroTrans If a term that will not sound foreign to the intended readers can be used *without doing violence to the original meaning*, I believe it is best to use it. The ideal translation is one that doesn't sound like a translation at all, but as if a native speaker wrote it to begin with. Not that I claim that's always easy to achieve, or even always possible, but I take it as a goal toward which to strive.

Calling a "Conserveduría del Registro Civil" an "Office of Vital Records" in a translation intended for a US audience is not "slavish conversion;" it is using the US term for the same concept. The intended target audience must be kept in mind.

In answer to your next point: again, Ms. Becker said this translation is intended for a US audience. If the intended audience were in the UK, for example, "Civil Registry Office" would be appropriate if that is the usual term in the UK.

Indeed terms from other countries are often "foreign-sounding", no less than the names of their cities, rivers, lakes and peoples' names. That doesn't mean we have to slavishly convert them into what they are not. If a US reader can understand "Civil Registry" (the term used in English by the vast majority of Hispanic countries) then such a translation is clear and unambiguous.

@ AllegroTrans It's not from the USA, no; but Yvonne Becker said the *target audience* is in the USA. A US reader would certainly understand "Civil Registry," but find it foreign-sounding.

@ Stephen This is not from the USA. English speakers in other countries are unlikely to understand "vital records" but surely can make sense of civil registration. I believe in accesible, country-neutral translating.

I think you hit it yourself, Yvonne From what I see in the DRAE treatment of "conservaduría," "Office of Vital Records" will serve your purposes just fine. You could use "Registry" if you wish, but "Office," in this context, is much more common in the USA.

I see no point at "localising" this to the US "Vital Statistics" or the UK "Births, marriages and deaths". For one thing, the functions of the SP Civil Regitsry are not identical to either of these.
