I would think that the author was perfectly aware of the difference between the more general term "a vessel" [= anything that could be used as container for a liquid"] and terms for "vessels" with added specific traits, like "a tube" (a specific shape of "a vessel")

So I would stick with the equally general term "un récipient", as the key point being made is that ONLY ONE "container for liquid" is needed, the exact shape of this "container" being of no importance/relevance in this sentence.

There is no point giving importance to what the author didn't consider important: the specific shape of the "vessel" (= irrelevant, a distraction) vs the fact of the "improvement" the whole ST is about being that all the testing can be done in ONLY ONE "vessel" (= relevant - that's the key point).

ALSO: "multiple vessel sizes and types" implies that all sorts of "vessels" could be used, one more reason to stick with an equally general term.
