It's a frame!

With Phil See also the refs. below.
philgoddard Oct 9, 2022:
Grate frame cooling would avoid having two words ending in -ing.

Linguee hint According to https://www.linguee.com/english-german/search?source=auto&qu... "Wange" means framing n (grate) (technology). So, grate framing cooling, or cooling grate framing?

grate cooling

... at least according to the quoted Schmid Energy references. You might also consider Phil's suggestion entered in the discussion box if you need to make a distinction between "Rostkühlung" and "Rostwangenkühlung".

I wouldn't be able to decide in favour of one of the more precise options without having seen a detailed picture or drawing of the grate. That said, I'd associate "Rostwange" with a (side) wall(ing) of the grate. On the other hand, https://books.google.de/books?id=OInfet8d0fQC&pg=RA1-PA131&l... has "grate framing".
Note from asker:
With tight deadlines, sometimes translators don't pay enough attention to details - that's what I think happened here with the lack of distinction between "Rostkühlung" and "Rostwangenkühlung" in Schmid's English translated version of the brochure, coupled with the fact that the term is very rare and seems to be exclusively used by Schmid [in other words, made up] - as you pointed out. So, to be precise, what would be the best equivalent: "grate frame cooling" or "grate wall cooling"?

"Rostwangenkühlung" seems to be a very rare term exclusively used by https://www.schmid-energy.ch/

Compare these two references:
https://www.schmid-energy.ch/files/attachments/Broschuere_In... (German)
https://www.schmid-energy.ch/files/medienarchiv/Broschuere-I... (English)

In the description/details of the UTSR visio system, the company translated both "Rostkühlung" and "Rostwangenkühlung" as "grate cooling", which is perhaps somewhat inaccurate for the term in question.
Note from asker:
Thank you so much, Steffen for finding and posting the English version of Schmid's brochure about the UTSR visio system and your explanation. You saved my day :-)
