Interestingly, the notion of ‘digital natives vs. digital immigrants’ arises in debates about learning approaches, with the suggestion that digital natives learn differently from digital immigrants, particularly with respect to them being more likely to parallel process and multi-task (Prensky, 2001). Despite the popularity of this notion, there is little evidence to support the proposition that so-called digital natives do learn differently from digital immigrants (Kirschner & De Bruyckere, 2017; Rikhye, Cook, & Berge, 2009), leading some researchers to propose the metaphor of a ‘digital melting pot’, supporting the notion of integrating rather than separating these two groups (Stoerger, 2009).
