parar

Catalan to English Other History
This doesn't make any sense to me.
Is there another possible meaning here? I don't see throwing all of the valuable things in the church on a bonfire as a good way to stop the fire.

Could it be a figurative bonfire maybe? That would be hard to reconcile with the text, but I am at a loss.

S Ben Price (asker) Oct 15, 2009:
;) Thanks everyone, now i get it. Just never heard that turn of phrase before. The town was Arbocet.
Montse Ballesteros Oct 15, 2009:

brooksa Oct 15, 2009:
Burning churches Don't think it's figurative at all. The burning of churches and attacks on clergy were a part of the Civil War (and before, see: Setmana Negra)
Andrew Campbell Oct 15, 2009:
Sounds figurative 1936 was a period of upheaval. It doesn't sound strange to say that they lost everything to the "bonfire" of the situation. Another possibility is literal, in that many wealthy people were apt to disguise themselves as workers during the rule of the Communists and Anarchists and may have actually burnt their valuables to blend in. Can you give us any more context?

parar >

agree Berni Armstrong : In 1936, the church was associated with the hated landed classes and when Franco rebelled against the legitimate Govt and the church supported him, many churches in Govt held territories were looted and burnt in retaliation.

agree Montse Ballesteros : Exacte.
