Medical: Cardiology
Mechanical heart valves, clinical trials
Taken from the description of a heart valve:
"In the closed position, the leaflets rest against the housing on their tabs and along its major radius. The housing contacts are on the pivot bias radii and the ID wall. In this position the leaflets are inclined at 40° to the ID wall. At the beginning of forward flow leaflets are resting at this angle will respond rapidly toward open. The leaflets will swing to an opening position dictated by the flow field, but can go to full 90 opening, or a position parallel to flow. The pivot prevents the leaflet from swinging past 90°. During this swing the leaflets also translate slightly downstream to the extent allowed by the elongated slot. There is no resistance to opening in the design and the leaflets rest at essentially 40° toward full open to even when closed"
