People usually use the term, as in "he's been in the trenches" to mean that someone has been "on the ground" engaged in first-hand field work, as opposed to sitting in an office dealing with bureaucracy, administration or secondary "mission support."

Quel che invece non convince molto me è "buon senso" ma in fondo è quello che dice. Magari "conoscenze / capacità di discrimine / intuito / comprensione acquisiti sul campo"...
