English term

rip-and-replace imaging

English to Polish Tech/Engineering IT (Information Technology)
Traditional approaches to Windows management are costly, complex and restrictive. Provisioning devices requires time consuming rip-and-replace imaging. Management is largely driven by Group Policies (GPOs), done on-premises, and only possible for network or domain-joined PCs.

Discussion

Frank Szmulowicz, Ph. D. Nov 19, 2016:
Rip and replace is exactly what the name implies – replacing an old, complex, unreliable system with one that is modern, fully functional, flexible, and responsive to changing business needs. It is often a last resort strategy – when no other approach will effectively bridge the gap between what is possible and what is needed from an organization’s computer systems. "

Blades and Imaging
Most blade servers ship with some form of imaging software. For Dell it is Dell Net Start, HP has Rapid Deployment Pack, and IBM has IBM Director. Each of these imaging solutions offers image capture and deployment to servers. A base image can be installed on a single machine; this is stored on the image server and can then be deployed to all other like servers in your data center.

Rip and Replace
In the event of a hardware failure, blades present the opportunity to simply pull out the one experiencing the failure and replacing it with a new server blade. The server can then be imaged back to the new blade.

A server blade can be “ripped” from its bay and “replaced” with another,
significantly reducing the time and effort required to maintain production.

provisioning

In general, provisioning means "providing" or making something available. The term is used in a variety of contexts in IT. For example, in grid computing, to provision is to activate a grid component, such as a server, array, or switch, so that it is available for use. In a storage area network (SAN), storage provisioning is the process of assigning storage to optimize performance. In telecommunications terminology, provisioning means providing a product or service, such as wiring or bandwidth.
