As the asker said, the English version may not be accurate. And in a review of the same Peugeot model, the author talks about ''the inbuilt guards in the front and rear bumpers''. Is this another possible translation? http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z1

neutral Bourth (X) : We had those in the 1960s, on chrome bumpers. I suspect these days its a little "sacrificial" rubber insert designed to take the punishment without damaging the "bumper" which these days is part and parcel of the bodywork.

agree Bourth (X) : I was just looking for a term for this. Usually front and rear to protect the underside of a 4x4 when crossing ditches, rivers, etc. or to make your 4WD Volvo look cool, but I don't associate them intimately with bumpers.

As I said in my response above, I don't associate skid plates with bumpers, but it is claimed here :

that the Volvo XC70 rear skid plate is a decorative accessory, not a functional skid plate.

The sabot in your text may be similar. What sort of vee-hickle?

Note that "skid" refers not to the action of the vehicle's wheels skidding on the road but to the "skidding/sliding" action of the underside of a car so protected when crossing obstacles. I suspect even the "decorative" skid plate on the Volvo might prevent your rear bumper being ripped off in a close encounter with a tree stump.

Just unearthed my XC70 blurb (I was thinking of getting one a few years ago but decided the closest dealer was too far away so went for a Passat estate instead - dealer only 10km away) and see THEY call the skid plates plaque de protection avant/arrière (en aluminium). But some websites refer to such things as sabot.

This sounds good, as if you're getting something worth paying extra for, but it would appear to mean that the "protective" skid plates are painted on with paint that makes them look like aluminium ...

A number of British sites, including second-hand adverts, refer to the "underbody engine protection plate" of this car, and a number also have rear-end views showing the "pretend" skid plate.

A number of French sites put sabot in quote marks. Reading around, it becomes clear that this is because they are not real sabots; without reading around it's easy to think it's simply a technogeek term put in quotes for that reason.

All of which, in my opinion, suggests that "insert" is not really that wide of the mark!!!!

Whisper it softly, but it is exactly the vehicle (and identical text) referred to by Clanola. My guess is that whoever translated it before didn't really know what it referred to either!
