cuspide cuspide

Definition / notes: | There is often some confusion about what this term means - it is not the same thing as a spire, a tympanum, a gable or a pediment. The cuspide is a purely decorative triangular element often seen on Italian Gothic buildings (see the duomo of siena). This is in contrast to a gable, tympanum or pediment, which are not purely decorative as they are part of a wall that supports a triangular or curved roof or area above a door. Spires, on the other hand, are entirely different, almost taking the shape of a tower. It is also not a cusp, which is the pointed joining of two curved lines, often seen in gothic windows. |
