English to Italian Other Linguistics
i.e. "fish & chips", "salt and pepper", "health and safety".
binomio seems to have a specifically mathematical connotation in italian.
any ideas?

My suggested English term which would be a true or closer synonym of binomio in English: there isn't one. The translation of "binomio" into English has to be "invented" case by case. Or anyway that is my experience of the word.

Legitimacy well from binomial to binomio would probably always be legitimate. The reverse is possible for words but would probably send most English readers reaching for their dictionaries and is really stretching meanings in English.

there is plenty of evidence to suggest that binominal and binomio are used in this specific linguistic sense. they don't have to prevail over other uses in order to be legitimate. and i'm still waiting for your suggested english term.

Fine but you can't apply that common usage of the Italian binomio to the English word binomial and you can't stretch the definition of the English to include pairs of ideas, rather than specific words.

UK IT comparison As I suspected binomial gets around 80,000 Ghits on UK sites and binomio over 5 million. I don't have a set term for two things which usually go together in English. When translating binomio into English I have never used binomio and would think very hard before doing so.

That is a very rare use of the word binomial that you are giving there Pauley! Its most common use in English is in mathematics. Its second use is for two word names in scientific nomenclature such as genus and species. The shorter oxford dictionary doesn't give your type of example.
