I am a graduate of French (major) and Spanish (minor) and offer both French and Romanian to English translations. However, my specialism is Romanian to English translation work, following some fifteen years' involvement in the country.
During an initial serendipitous two-year placement in Romania (1996 - 1998) as a classroom assistant in a high school I learnt the language to a reasonable degree of fluency and continued to be a regular visitor to the country over the next seven years. I moved back to Romania in late 2005, initially staying full-time whilst consolidating my language skills and working as a translator and English teacher. Since late 2009, I have divided my time between the UK and Romania, building my own translation and language services business as a freelancer.
The bulk of my translation and proof-reading work is conducted online via agencies these days although I also have regular commissions from various corporate and individual clients ranging from novelists to academics via crewing agencies and hoteliers. My preferred fields are technical (especially energy generation), environmental & ecological, pharmaceutical & medical, automotive & mechanical and hospitality & tourism, although I have diverse interests and sometimes surprise even myself (!). The last two years have seen me increasingly taking on EU legislative documents and memos on an eclectic range of subjects and learning more about the finer points of legal language and related translation issues.
Previous work experience in other fields has given me experience in teamwork, public relations and administration; time management, project management, delegation, communication and supervision. I have become accustomed to accommodating the needs, wishes and interests of clients of varying cultural backgrounds, and consider myself outgoing, creative and flexible. Living and working abroad has broadened my practical foreign language skills and given me close awareness of cultural differences. |
