Source text - English There was never a forewarning that this thing was coming. It came out of nowhere, as ghosts do, and it would disappear as it had come. Every time it left, I stretched my arms out in all directions, mumbled two short prayers, one to God and another to the ancestors, and then waited on my terrified sister to embrace me. The embraces, I remember, were always tight and long, as if she hoped the moment would last forever.
Every time this thing took her, she returned altered, unrecognisable, as if two people were trapped inside her, both fighting to get out, but not before tearing each other into pieces. The first thing that this thing took from her, from us, was speech, and then it took our memories. She began speaking in a language that was unfamiliar, her words trembling as if trying to relay unthinkable revelations from the gods. The memories faded one after the other until our past was a blur.
Some of the memories that have remained with me are of her screaming and running away from home. I remember when she ran out to the fields in the middle of the night, screaming, first waking my mother and me and then abducting the entire village from their sleep. Men and boys emerged from their houses carrying their knobkerries as if out to hunt an animal. Women and children stayed behind, frightened children clutching their mother’s nightgowns. The men and boys, disorientated and peeved, shuffled in the dark and split into small groups as instructed by a man who at the absence of a clear plan crowned himself a leader. Those with torches flicked them on and pushed back the darkness. Some took candles; they squeezed their bodies close and wrapped blankets around themselves in an attempt to block the wind, but all their matches extinguished before they could light a single candle.
Those without torches or candles walked on even though the next step in such darkness was possibly a plunge down a cliff. This was unlikely, it should be said, as most of them were born in the village, grew up there, got married there, had used that very same field as their toilet for all their lives, and had had in overlapping periods only left the village when they went to work for the white man in large cities. They had a blueprint of the village in their minds; its walking paths, its indentations, its rivers, its mountains, its holes where ghosts lived were imprinted in their blood.
Hours later, the first small group of men and boys, and then another and another, emerged from the darkness. They did not find her. They had looked everywhere, at least they had claimed. They were worried about not finding my sister or annoyed at being woken in the middle of the night – I could not tell. Morphed into defeated men, their faces drooped to the floor, and their bodies slouched as if they had carried a heavy load. Each group was not aware of the other groups’ whereabouts. They did not even know if the other groups still existed or if the night had swallowed them. They had last seen them when they wished them luck when they split up. They had heard them yell my sister’s name, in the dark, before going silent.
She did not scream.

Each group chanted with great terror. With each group that emerged, I hoped that it would chant something else, but nothing changed; the chant was, as if it had been rehearsed for a long time, repeated the same each time, tearing my heart apart.

The chant went on until all groups had returned.
Mother, a woman of tall build and wide hips, only returned home when the sun was way up in the sky the next day, carrying my sister on her back.
She would scream in intervals as if to taunt me, my mother said.
I remember another time my sister banged her head against the wall until she bled. She and I were racing around the rondavel to see who would return first to our starting point. I think we were twelve and fifteen then. She had begun to grow breasts, and she was telling me how sensitive they were. She had brushed her fingers over them and a sensation she had never felt before had pulsed through her body. She did not know what was going on or what had caused her body to tingle apart from that touch. I remember trying to interject that she was becoming a woman, she was becoming sexual – not that I knew anything myself.
She dismissed me teasingly, in the gentle manner that she dismissed things, leaving one not convinced whether she was in agreement or not. You know nothing about breasts, she told me after examining my chest. I told her that I was a late bloomer. The lie came out of me as naturally as truth comes to others. I had made my mother, and anyone else who knew, promise that she must never know the truth about how my chest had no breasts. She teased me for a long time that day and days after. It was nothing malicious, it was in the manner that a sibling tells another sibling that they have a big head but get upset when someone else says the words.
Then it arrived. I did not see it approaching. I had always hoped that I would so that I could stop it. At the time I was convinced that if one observed more carefully one could see it coming, with horns, spikes and an oversized head – that’s how I imagined it looked. I don’t know if she ever saw it coming but I hope not. The horror of seeing a monster coming for you and not being able to run even though one is not in a dream would have been unbearable for her.
I was telling her how once I fooled the boys in my class that I had grown breasts. It was a Friday. I stuffed pantyhose into my shirt, to look like breasts, and wore my mother’s bra. The stupid boys never stopped to wonder at the improbability of the situation. How is it possible that my breasts had grown in one day?
So the boys stared at me the whole day, convinced that I had suddenly bloomed in the night, I said to her.
I stared out into the landscape that began in my mother’s garden and stretched far beyond sight. The sun was setting behind the forest and dust was floating everywhere. Where the dust was dense, one could see it sway this way and that way as if in the middle of a dance. A sophisticated dance, the kind that, I imagined, happened in other worlds, very far from the village. The village was settling into repose. The cold summer air had begun to torment the villager’s bare legs and arms. Everything was in silhouette, including the horses that trotted across the veld, the cattle that lowered their heads to graze, and the water that flowed down the cliff. The mountains, ancient but nevertheless still standing, were casting giant shadows over the landscape. The shadows stretched so far from the mountain that they began to exist as if they were solid entities on their own.
In the middle of a story I was telling her, she gently rocked back and forth then began hitting the back of her head against the wall. For a short time I thought she was providing rhythm for my anecdote. It was only when she began to scream, in an attempt to churn this thing out of her, that I became alarmed. By then she had smashed her head and left blood on the wall. She had transformed into someone else. She was not here. I tried to grab her or whatever was there. I tried to make her stop. I held her hands, bound them behind her back, laid my body against hers, but she pushed me away easily with a strength that came to her only when this thing tore her apart. Had it not been a mud wall, an old one at that, she would have cracked her skull open. Instead, she cracked the wall with her head.
The bloodstain remained visible on the wall long after my mother scraped it off; long after she had applied three layers of mud and new water paint. The stains stayed long after the sangoma came and cleansed the spot where my sister had bludgeoned her head. I began to smell the bloodstains in my dreams, in my clothes, in everything. The smell of blood lingered after many sunsets had come; even after the rain had come.
The other time that I remember this thing entering my sister was when she threw hot porridge on me. This thing arrived in her and abducted her while she hovered over a hot porridge pot. In the middle of a joke she never finished, she flung the pot across the room. It only just missed my face but my chest was not that fortunate. I don’t remember opening the bottom half of the door of the rondavel but I found myself standing outside, naked, having pulled my dress off. The pain was unbearable. Hours later, when she gained consciousness, she was shocked and devastated about what had happened to me. I told her I had poured hot water on myself by mistake. She would never forgive herself.
Though it had been tough in other months, it was in November that things got worse. This thing, this thing that took over her followed her to school and she had to drop out. It arrived while she was in class.
She was so strong, so out of control, that she flung a desk across the room and smashed a window. When I arrived in her class, everyone was standing around watching. She had broken a chair against the wall too, and she was screaming words I did not understand. I stood at a short distance from her. All she had to do was look into my eyes. Please look into my eyes, I begged. Her eyes had turned red and her entire body was shaking. When she did look at me, after scanning the bewildered faces of the crowd, she stopped screaming. She knew me. I stared right into her eyes and I could see this thing leave; I could see my sister returning.
After that incident I went truant from school. Every morning I threw up. I convinced my mother that I was sick. She asked a boy who went to the same school to tell my class teacher that I had come down with an illness.
I want to be in the same class with you, I said to my sister, so I am going to wait until you are fine so we can go to school together.
They will never allow that. Mother, the teachers, the principal.
Yes they will. It is not like I want to study a grade higher. I want to study with you in the same class.
She and I spent that week doing sketches. With a pencil she could sketch me onto the paper such that it appeared as if I was alive on the page, another me, more happy, less torn, existing elsewhere.
She begged and begged me to go to school and promised me that she would be fine and that every day when I came back she would have new sketches for me.
We spent our days talking, one ear listening out for my mother’s footsteps. We would know she was coming by the sound of the door closing when she walked out of the main house, then her shadow would come first through the door of our house.
My mother took my sister to more sangomas and more churches and gave her more bottles of medication. She became unresponsive. She only nodded and shook her head at irrelevant moments – there was nothing else. It turned out later, when I went back to school, that my week of absence had gone unreported. This bothered neither my class teacher nor me. Over the years my sister had missed so much school that I had caught up with her and was, in fact, two grades above her.
A few weeks after I had returned to school, the teacher told us about schizophrenia and I knew then that this is what my sister had and that all the medication she had been taking would never help her. Instead, it was destroying her. The teacher told us that there is no cure for this thing but I knew that my sister deserved to feel something, anything.
The first thing my sister and I got rid of was her arsenal of medication. This is going to be our secret, I said. On our long walks, away from our mother, we dug holes and buried the roots she had to chew. The way to get rid of the medication drink, I demonstrated to her, was to pour it into the mug and take an empty sip, then when no-one was looking throw it out the back window that had grass growing below it. The window also opened to a large landscape where the cattle grazed. When mother asks if I have given you your medication you must nod, I told her.
I came back from school the following Monday afternoon and she took me to our house and poured her medication, took an empty sip, and threw it out the window with a smile. It was our game.
She began to recognise herself. She and I began to communicate again. We invented our own language because she had stopped talking. We simply gestured to each other and then over time we inserted a few words here and there.
We began to love each other again. I remember the day we connected again. We were in the same room we had always sat in, staring, as we always did, into the landscape, over the mountains, at the horizon, into the sun, until our eyes could not take us any further. It was a day of looking out, smiling, laughing, crying, holding hands.
We sat there and watched the day go by. We didn’t even attempt to say a word. I realised then that she and I needed no words.
In the afternoon that day it began to rain. I dragged her out of the house. We jumped in the rain, begging it to pour on us so we could be tall, big, strong, bold. In that moment, my sister returned; she smiled, laughed. That day we began to form new childhood memories, filling the void left by the one that had been wiped out.
We lay on the wet ground, stretched out our arms and legs, rain falling on our faces, and felt free. But my mother had seen us laugh and jump and thought that this thing was going to come again.
The following day the entire village gathered outside our house for yet another ritual meant to cure my sister. She had been through all these rituals and church sermons and nothing had changed. Each time sangomas and pastors promised that she would be healed within days. There was once, at least according to the elders, a glimpse of these sangomas healing. The tobacco, meat and matches that had been put in the rondavel for the ancestors to take at night, in one of the many rituals, were not there by morning, leading them to believe that the ancestors had healed her. It was not long after that this thing came again, proving that the tobacco, meat and matches had simply been stolen by thieves.
The day of the ritual, I remember how the clouds moved across the sky in a hurry, and how thick fog hung on to the grass, the mountains, the riverbanks and forests as if to announce death. It hung so low that people appeared to be floating with their legs cut off below their knees. The women’s chatter and songs reached us long before the crowd was visible. It appeared as if the fog had swallowed them and that the women would never come into sight; all the same, they did. They ululated and chanted songs as they approached our home.
Men came in silence, arms folded behind their backs, carrying sticks.
A few minutes after the women arrived, smoke escaped the fireplace into the sky, dancing with the moving clouds as if the sky was their dance floor. The children ran around and kicked soccer balls that had been made by stuffing papers into plastic bags. Everyone moved in a chaotic choreography. That way went an obese woman balancing a bucket of water on her head; this way went a child with a tablecloth; that way went a dog with a bone; this way went chickens; that way stood women gossiping about my sister. From our house, I could see the chaos amplifying as more people arrived.
I looked at my sister and found her face, as it had become in earlier months, emotionless. In the past few days she had given me hope that she had returned. Now tears rolled down our cheeks. I knew then that she still felt something, that the last few days of holding hands, laughing and jumping in the rain were not a dream.
The fog began to clear and everything came into focus. The mountains, landscape, river and the other villages were there, unmoved.
An old man who had been smoking his pipe behind the kraal emptied it and stuffed it in his pockets. The ritual began. Knives were drawn and the goat was first stabbed in the stomach to summon our ancestors from their enclaves, and then it was meat. After some time, an old aunt came for us, calling for us to come out of the house. We hugged tightly, my sister and I, wiped each other’s tears. It was only after we had heard her footsteps approaching our house that we walked out, holding hands, fingers tightly entwined. The only way to have torn me away from her would have been to cut us apart.
The villagers shouted insults at the ‘thing’, as it remained unknown to them. For what felt like an entire lifetime, while my sister and I sat at a corner in the kraal, our heads bowed, the elders kept referring to this thing as the devil’s work and demons. None of them knew my sister; none of them cared. The sun was up now, thick shadows gathering around the house. Even though there was no wind, the windmill by the fields made a creaking sound.
My mother was torn and defeated and questioned why God gave this thing to my sister – and my father. Secrets stay buried for so long but one day they rise to open like seeds breaking free from the earth. Nobody had ever mentioned that my father had this thing. That he had left one day on his horse, to see distant relatives, and had never come back. To only be seen in the way the deceased are seen after their death, in dreams and hallucinations.
He had been seen in some village at least twice, my mother told me. The person who had seen him yelled and waved but he never bothered to look. They were not sure if it was my father but they were convinced that it had to be. He was never buried, though it is now twenty years later. There was nothing to bury. I have no memory of my father. There was always hope that he would return from somewhere; nobody knew where, nobody cared, as long as he returned.
The night of the ritual, my sister and I slept lying the same way, instead of different directions. I woke up and she was holding me, squeezing me, and she had sunk her teeth in the pillow so she would not cry. She jerked for a few minutes and then fell asleep in my arms.
In the morning, I went to milk the goat. I saw two human shadows hovering above the kraal. At first, though it was unusual, I thought nothing of it even as they mumbled something to each other. In the shadows that leaped inside the kraal, with the smell of manure, I saw that it was my mother and an uncle who had come to stay with us for the ritual. It was as if their heads were bound together into one, creating a giant head, a ghost even. I had meant to get up but when I heard them mention my sister, I put the jug of milk down and crouched, leaning on the goat so it did not move. My mother and Smellyfoot, the man who had moved in with my mother, were making plans to take my sister away.
The medication and the rituals did not work, my mother said. The way she saw it, my sister needed to go see Nkunzi. This thing is going to come back, she said.
Nkunzi was a sangoma from a remote village in which houses were lined miles apart from one another; he was famous for ‘baking’ people like my sister, claiming to cure them. It is said that whenever there was a car approaching his village, people would shout for Nkunzi to come out. Your demons are here, they would say.
Smellyfoot, a name that my sister had given him, agreed with my mother. We were not his kids; why would he care? And that was it, they decided: the next day my sister would be taken to Nkunzi to be baked. This is what they did with people who heard voices or demons, as they called them; they baked them until the demons left them. What was even more terrible than the baking was that people had come to be convinced of it.
I had heard of how Nkunzi baked people. He would make a fire from cow dung and wood, and once the fire burned red he would tie the demon-possessed person onto a section of zinc roofing then place it on the fire. He claimed to be baking the demons and that the person would recover from the burns a week later. I had not heard of anyone who had died but I had not heard of anyone who had lived either.
I could not allow this to happen to my sister.
After sunset I got my things and we left together. The twilight was approaching. I couldn’t think where to go. We wandered first into the main road then I spotted many eyes staring at us so I changed direction and sunk into the valley. My sister held tightly on to my hand. I did not tell her anything she did not need to know. We were going to see an aunt who had suddenly fallen ill. We have to see her before the sun rises tomorrow, I told her.
There was no aunt who was ill.
We walked in the valley, on the banks of the river, then up a wet mound and over a fence that had once stood but was now lying broken on the ground. We came to a bridge with a tar road and because we were both scared of water we crossed the bridge and walked on the road alongside the river.
We hardly noticed that it had become night; suddenly a giant moon had sneaked above us and stars had weaved patterns only gods understood. Mountains and landscape were now mere shapes, giant and indistinct, leaving us, tiny as we were then, the only things present in the world.
We walked by the river and then abandoned it, walked up a mountain and down the other side into a village. I was not sure whether it was Philani or another village. I had only ever been there once before and that visit was not even physical. My mother had mentioned it in one of her stories before she moved us into the new house – before a week later replacing our father, and us, with the Smellyfoot.
Once we descended the mountain and found ourselves in a strange village we would knock on the first house that had its light on and sleep there. That had been the initial plan, but it was flawed. Everyone in the villages knew everyone. I was convinced that whomever we asked for a place to sleep, even if we were to lie and give them false names, tell them that we were heading to the next village but something had delayed us, they would have recognised us, either because we have my grandfather’s ears or my mother’s nose or that they had seen us when we were toddlers, even stroked our buttocks. It had always been said that my sister had my grandfather’s forehead. The plan was too risky.
We are close, I told my sister. Close to where, I had no idea. All the same, we were going forward, and it felt like we had reached where we were going, which was nowhere in particular. All that mattered was that we were now far from home.
We had no idea where we were going to sleep, what we were going to eat or how we were going to live, but returning home was not an option. Maybe when my mother dies, I said, maybe then we can return.
We crossed Philani village – I was still I not sure which village it was – with dogs barking at us, or at something else, perhaps a pole that had always stood there. In no time at all we reached another village. My sister stopped asking me why we were leaving home. She squeezed my hand every now and then and I hers.
Many times, I contemplated telling my sister why we were running away from home but I could not. I did not know where to begin. There was and still is no perfect place to begin; the real story would destroy her.
My mother preferred her numb. I preferred a sister. A laughing sister, a talking sister, and a sister who looked into my eyes and cried and laughed. Imagine the reflections that suddenly appear when one stares into water and beats it. That is what happens to my sister. I want to tell her she has a mental disorder that makes it impossible for her to tell fiction from reality.
We could not see any lights. People had long gone to sleep. We had no idea where we were but we knew that we had reached another village. The moon had disappeared and the stars were now only dots in the sky. Morning was close, I thought, and I told my sister who nodded and smiled.
We had no idea what time it was but it had been a long time since we left home, and our feet hurt. We decided to sleep under a tree, to wake once the sun was up and walk again, to somewhere.
Translation - Italian Questa cosa arrivava sempre senza il minimo preavviso. Appariva dal nulla, come un fantasma, e scompariva così come era arrivata. Ogni volta che se ne andava allungavo le braccia in tutte le direzioni, borbottavo due brevi preghiere, una a Dio e una agli antenati, e poi aspettavo che mia sorella, terrorizzata, mi abbracciasse. Ricordo che gli abbracci erano sempre lunghi e stretti, come se sperasse che quel momento sarebbe durato per sempre.
Ogni volta che questa cosa la prendeva, lei ritornava cambiata, irriconoscibile. L'orrore di vedere un mostro che ti viene a cercare e non poter scappare, senza nemmeno essere in un sogno, sarebbe stato insopportabile per lei.
Le stavo raccontando di come un giorno avevo fatto credere ai ragazzi a scuola che mi era cresciuto il seno. Era un venerdì. Mi infilai delle calze nella camicia, in modo che sembrassero delle tette, e indossai il reggiseno di mia madre. Quegli stupidi dei ragazzi non pensarono per un secondo a quanto poco fosse credibile. Com'era possibile che il seno mi fosse cresciuto in un giorno?
E così i ragazzi mi fissarono per tutto il giorno, convinti che fossi sbocciata in una notte, le dissi.
Fissai lo sguardo sul paesaggio che iniziava nell'orto di mia madre e si estendeva ben oltre lo sguardo. Il sole stava tramontando dietro alla foresta e la polvere aleggiava ovunque. Dove la polvere si addensava, la si poteva osservare mentre ondeggiava di qua e di là come se fosse nel bel mezzo di una danza. Una danza raffinata, il tipo di danza che, immaginavo, avveniva in altri mondi, molto lontani dal villaggio. Il villaggio si stava disponendo al riposo. L'aria fredda dell'estate aveva iniziato a tormentare le braccia e le gambe nude dei suoi abitanti. Ogni cosa aveva l'aspetto di una silhouette, compresi i cavalli che trottavano nel veld, le mucche che abbassavano il capo per brucare, e l'acqua che scorreva dal dirupo. Le montagne, antiche eppure ancora in piedi, disegnavano ombre giganti sul paesaggio. Le ombre si estendevano a una distanza tale dalle montagne che iniziavano ad esistere come entità concrete a sé stanti.
Nel mezzo della storia che stavo raccontando, iniziò a ondeggiare dolcemente avanti e indietro, e poi a colpire il muro con la testa. Per un attimo, pensai che stesse accompagnando a ritmo il mio aneddoto. Fu solo quando iniziò ad urlare, nel tentativo di scrollarsi di dosso questa cosa, che mi preoccupai. A quel punto si era rotta la testa e aveva sporcato il muro di sangue. Si era trasformata in qualcun altro. Non era lì. Cercai di afferrarla, lei o qualsiasi cosa fosse. Cercai di farla smettere. Le tenni le mani bloccate dietro la schiena, premetti il corpo contro il suo, ma lei mi spinse via facilmente con una forza che emergeva solo quando questa cosa la faceva a pezzi. Non fosse stato un muro di fango, e per giunta vecchio, si sarebbe spaccata il cranio. Invece, fece una crepa nel muro a suon di testate.
Le macchie di sangue rimasero visibili sul muro a lungo, anche dopo che mia madre le ebbe raschiate via, anche dopo che ebbe applicato tre strati di fango e della vernice fresca. Le macchie rimasero anche dopo che la sangoma venne a purificare il punto dove mia sorella aveva sbattuto la testa. Iniziai a sentire l'odore delle macchie di sangue nei sogni, nei vestiti, dappertutto. L'odore di sangue perdurò per molti tramonti, anche dopo l'arrivo delle piogge.
L'altra occasione in cui ricordo che questa cosa entrò in mia sorella fu quando mi tirò addosso del porridge bollente. Questa cosa entrò in lei e la rapì mentre gironzolava attorno a una pentola di porridge bollente. A metà di una barzelletta mai terminata, lanciò la pentola attraverso la stanza. Mancò la mia faccia per un pelo, ma il mio petto non fu così fortunato. Non ricordo di aver aperto la parte inferiore della porta del rondavel, ma mi trovai in piedi all'esterno, nuda, dopo essermi strappata il vestito di dosso. Il dolore era insopportabile. Ore dopo, quando riprese coscienza, era sconvolta e devastata per ciò che mi era successo. Le dissi che mi ero versata addosso dell'acqua bollente per sbaglio. Non se lo sarebbe mai perdonata.
Anche se era stata dura in altri mesi, fu a novembre che le cose peggiorarono. Questa cosa, questa cosa che si era impossessata di lei, la seguì anche a scuola costringendola ad abbandonarla. Arrivò mentre era a lezione.
Era così forte, così incontrollabile, che lanciò un banco attraverso l'aula e distrusse una finestra. Quando arrivai nell'aula, erano tutti in piedi e la fissavano. Aveva anche rotto una sedia contro il muro, e stava urlando parole che non comprendevo. Mi fermai a poca distanza da lei. Bastava che mi guardasse negli occhi. TI prego, guardami negli occhi, la pregai. Aveva gli occhi iniettati di sangue e tremava dalla testa ai piedi. Quando mi guardò, dopo aver scrutato le facce sconvolte della folla, smise di urlare. Mi riconosceva. La fissai negli occhi e vidi questa cosa andarsene; riuscivo a vedere mia sorella che ritornava.
Dopo quell'incidente, iniziai a saltare la scuola. Vomitavo ogni mattina. Convinsi mia madre che ero malata. Chiese a un ragazzo che andava a scuola con me di dire all'insegnante della mia classe che mi ero ammalata.
Voglio stare in classe con te, dissi a mia sorella, aspetterò che tu stia bene così potremo andare a scuola assieme.
Non ce lo permetteranno mai. Madre, gli insegnanti, il preside.
Sì, lo faranno. Non è come se volessi saltare un anno. Voglio studiare con te, nella stessa classe.
Passammo quella settimana a disegnare. Con una matita lei riusciva a disegnarmi sulla carta come se fossi viva sul foglio, un'altra me, più felice, meno sconvolta, una me che esisteva altrove.
Mi pregò e ripregò di andare a scuola e promise che sarebbe andato tutto bene e che ogni giorno al mio ritorno avrebbe avuto dei nuovi disegni per me.
Passavamo le giornate a parlare, con un orecchio attento a sentire i passi di mia madre. Capivamo che stava arrivando dal rumore della porta che si chiudeva quando usciva dalla casa principale, e la sua ombra l'avrebbe preceduta attraverso la porta della nostra casa.
Mia madre portò mia sorella da altre sangoma e in altre chiese e le diede altre bottiglie di medicine. Lei smise di reagire agli stimoli. Si limitava ad annuire e scuotere il capo senza una logica, non faceva nient'altro. In seguito, quando tornai a scuola, venne fuori che nessuno si era accorto della mia settimana di assenza. Né io né il mio insegnante ce n'eravamo preoccupati. Nel corso degli anni mia sorella aveva saltato così tanti giorni di scuola che l'avevo raggiunta ed ero, anzi, due anni avanti al suo.
Alcune settimane dopo il mio ritorno a scuola, l'insegnante ci parlò della schizofrenia e capii che era ciò di cui soffriva mia sorella, e che tutte le medicine che aveva preso non l'avrebbero mai aiutata. Anzi, la stavano distruggendo. L'insegnante disse che non c'era una cura, ma sapevo che mia sorella meritava di provare qualcosa, qualsiasi cosa.
Per prima cosa, mia sorella ed io ci liberammo del suo arsenale di medicinali. Sarà il nostro segreto, le dissi. Nelle nostre lunghe passeggiate, lontano da nostra madre, scavavamo buche e seppellivamo le radici che doveva masticare. Il modo di liberarsi della medicina da bere, le mostrai, era versarla nella tazza e far finta di bere un sorso, poi, quando nessuno guardava, buttare tutto fuori dalla finestra sul retro, sotto la quale cresceva dell'erba. La finestra dava anche su un ampio panorama dove brucavano le mucche. Quando madre chiede se ti ho dato la medicina devi annuire, le dissi.
Tornai da scuola il lunedì pomeriggio seguente e mi portò nella nostra casa e si versò la medicina, fece finta di bere un sorso e tirò tutto fuori dalla finestra con un sorriso. Era il nostro gioco.
Iniziò a riconoscersi. Iniziammo a comunicare di nuovo. Inventammo una nostra lingua, perché lei aveva smesso di parlare. Ci scambiavamo dei gesti e poi piano piano inserimmo delle parole qua e là.
Iniziammo a volerci bene di nuovo. Ricordo il giorno in cui si ristabilì il legame tra noi. Eravamo nella stessa stanza di sempre, a fissare, come sempre, il panorama, sopra le montagne, verso l'orizzonte, nel sole, fino a dove arrivavano i nostri occhi. Passammo la giornata a guardare fuori, a sorridere, a ridere, a piangere, a tenerci per mano.
Ci sedemmo e osservammo lo scorrere delle ore. Non provammo a dire nemmeno una parola. In quel momento mi accorsi che lei e io non avevamo bisogno di parole.
Nel pomeriggio iniziò a piovere. La trascinai fuori di casa. Saltammo sotto la pioggia, pregandola di cadere su di noi così da poter diventare alte, grandi, forti, coraggiose. In quell'istante, mia sorella tornò; sorrise, rise. Quel giorno iniziammo a creare nuovi ricordi d'infanzia, riempiendo il vuoto lasciato da quelli che erano stati spazzati via.
Ci sdraiammo sul terreno bagnato, allungando le braccia e le gambe, mentre la pioggia ci cadeva sul viso, e ci sentimmo libere. Ma mia madre ci aveva viste ridere e saltare e pensò che questa cosa sarebbe ritornata.
Il giorno dopo, tutto il villaggio si riunì davanti alla nostra casa per l'ennesimo rituale per curare mia sorella. Aveva subito tutti quei rituali e quei sermoni in chiesa, e non era cambiato niente. Ogni volta i sangoma e i pastori promettevano che sarebbe guarita entro pochi giorni. Una volta, almeno secondo gli anziani, si vide un barlume delle capacità di guarigione dei sangoma. Il tabacco, la carne e i fiammiferi che erano stati lasciati nel rondavel perché gli antenati li prendessero durante la notte, nel corso di uno dei vari rituali, non c'erano più la mattina seguente. Gli anziani pensarono che gli antenati l'avessero guarita. Poco tempo dopo questa cosa tornò di nuovo, dimostrando che il tabacco la carne e i fiammiferi erano stati semplicemente rubati dai ladri.
Il giorno del rituale, ricordo come le nuvole si affrettassero nel cielo, e come la fitta nebbia aleggiasse sull'erba, le montagne, le rive del fiume e le foreste come ad annunciare la morte. Era così bassa che tutti sembravano galleggiare, con le gambe troncate sotto le ginocchia. Le chiacchiere e i canti delle donne ci raggiunsero ben prima che la folla fosse visibile. Sembrava che la nebbia li avesse inghiottiti e che le donne non sarebbero mai apparse; tuttavia, apparvero. Ululavano e salmodiavano canzoni mentre si avvicinavano alla nostra casa.
Gli uomini arrivarono in silenzio, le braccia incrociate dietro la schiena, tenendo dei bastoni.
Pochi minuti dopo l'arrivo delle donne, del fumo sfuggì dal camino verso il cielo, danzando con le nuvole in movimento come se il cielo fosse una pista da ballo. I bambini correvano in giro e calciavano palloni da calcio fatti riempiendo di carta dei sacchetti di plastica. Tutti si muovevano in una caotica coreografia. Di là andava una donna obesa che teneva un secchio d'acqua in equilibrio sulla testa; di qua un bambino con una tovaglia; di là un cane con un osso; di qua delle galline; di là stavano delle donne che spettegolavano su mia sorella. Dalla nostra casa, osservavo il caos aumentare man mano che arrivavano altre persone.
Osservai mia sorella e vidi che il suo volto, com'era diventato nei mesi passati, era impassibile. Nei giorni precedenti mi aveva dato la speranza di essere tornata. Ora, le lacrime ci bagnavano le guance. Sapevo che provava ancora delle emozioni, che gli ultimi giorni passati a tenerci per mano, ridere e saltare sotto la pioggia non erano stati un sogno.
La nebbia si sollevò e tutto tornò a fuoco. Le montagne, il panorama, il fiume e gli altri villaggi erano lì, immobili.
Un vecchio che stava fumando la pipa dietro al kraal la svuotò e se la infilò in tasca. Iniziò il rituale. Apparvero dei coltelli e la capra venne prima accoltellata allo stomaco per evocare gli antenati dalle loro enclave, e poi divenne carne. Dopo qualche tempo, un'anziana zia venne da noi, e ci urlò di uscire di casa. Ci abbracciammo strette, mia sorella ed io, e ci asciugammo le lacrime a vicenda. Fu solo dopo aver udito i suoi passi che si avvicinavano alla casa che uscimmo, tenendoci per mano, le dita saldamente intrecciate. L'unico modo per separarmi da lei sarebbe stato tagliarmi via.
Gli abitanti del villaggio urlavano insulti alla "cosa", perché non riuscivano a comprenderla. Per un tempo che sembrò una vita intera, mentre mia sorella ed io sedevamo in un angolo del kraal, le teste chinate, gli anziani si riferirono alla cosa come a un'opera del diavolo e dei demoni. Nessuno di loro conosceva mia sorella; a nessuno interessava. Il sole ormai era alto, ombre spesse si raccolsero attorno alla casa. Anche se non c'era vento, il mulino a vento tra i campi scricchiolò.
Mia madre era distrutta e sconfitta e si chiedeva perché Dio avesse inflitto questa cosa a mia sorella – e a mio padre. I segreti restano sepolti a lungo, ma un giorno emergono e si schiudono come semi che evadono dal terreno. Nessuno aveva mai accennato al fatto che mio padre aveva questa cosa. Che un giorno se n'era andato sul suo cavallo, per andare a trovare parenti lontani, e non era mai più tornato. Per essere visto come si vedono i defunti dopo la morte, nei sogni e nelle allucinazioni.
Era stato visto in qualche villaggio almeno due volte, mi disse mia madre. La persona che l'aveva visto gridò e lo salutò, ma lui non si curò mai di guardare. Non erano sicuri che fosse mio padre, ma erano convinti che dovesse esserlo. Non era mai stato seppellito, anche se ormai sono passati vent'anni. Non c'era niente da seppellire. Non ho nessun ricordo di mio padre. C'era sempre la speranza che sarebbe tornato; nessuno sapeva quando, a nessuno importava, bastava che tornasse.
La notte del rituale, mia sorella ed io dormimmo sdraiate nella stessa direzione, invece che al contrario. Mi svegliai e mi stava abbracciando, stringendomi, e aveva affondato i denti nel cuscino per non piangere. Si dondolò per alcuni minuti e poi si addormentò tra le mie braccia.
La mattina dopo, andai a mungere la capra. Vidi le ombre di due persone aleggiare sul kraal. Inizialmente, per quanto fosse insolito, non ci badai nemmeno quando iniziarono a mormorare tra di loro. Nelle ombre che saltavano nel kraal, con l'odore di letame, vidi che erano mia madre e uno zio che era venuto a stare da noi per il rituale. Era come se le loro teste fossero unite in una sola, creando una testa gigante, o magari un fantasma. Volevo alzarmi, ma quando li udii fare il nome di mia sorella, posai la brocca del latte e mi chinai, appoggiandomi sulla capra perché non si muovesse. Mia madre e Piedepuzzolente, l'uomo che era andato a vivere con mia madre, stavano complottando per mandare via mia sorella.
Le cure e i rituali non hanno funzionato, disse mia madre. Secondo lei, mia sorella doveva andare da Nkunzi. Questa cosa tornerà, disse.
Nkunzi era un sangoma di un villaggio remoto in cui le case erano disposte a miglia di distanza l'una dall'altra; era noto per "cuocere" quelli come mia sorella, affermando di curarli. Si diceva che quando una macchina si avvicinava al villaggio, la gente urlava a Nkunzi di uscire. I tuoi demoni sono arrivati, dicevano.
Piedepuzzolente, nome che gli era stato dato da mia sorella, concordò con mia madre. Non eravamo figli suoi, cosa gliene poteva importare? E così, presero una decisione: il giorno dopo mia sorella sarebbe stata portata da Nkunzi per venire cotta. Facevano così con chi sentiva le voci, o i demoni, come li chiamavano loro; li cuocevano finché i demoni non se ne andavano. Ancora peggio della cottura era il fatto che la gente ormai credeva che funzionasse.
Avevo sentito di come Nkunzi cuocesse la gente. Preparava un falò di letame di vacca e legname, e una volta che il fuoco attecchiva per bene legava la persona posseduta a un pezzo di lamiera di zinco, e poi la metteva sul fuoco. Affermava di cuocere i demoni e che la persona sarebbe guarita dalle bruciature una settimana dopo. Non avevo sentito di nessuno che fosse morto, ma non avevo nemmeno sentito di nessuno che fosse sopravvissuto.
Non potevo permettere che mia sorella facesse quella fine.
Dopo il tramonto, presi le mie cose e partimmo assieme. Era quasi il tramonto. Non riuscivo a pensare a un luogo dove andare. Prima, vagammo lungo la strada principale, poi notai molti occhi che ci fissavano, così cambiai direzione e ci addentrammo nella valle. Mia sorella mi teneva stretta per mano. Non le dissi niente più del necessario. Stavamo andando a trovare una zia che si era ammalata improvvisamente. Dobbiamo arrivare prima che il sole sorga domani, le dissi.
Non c'era nessuna zia malata.
Camminammo nella valle, sulle rive del fiume, poi su per un cumulo umido e al di là di uno steccato che una volta era in piedi, ma ora giaceva a pezzi sul terreno. Giungemmo a un ponte con una strada asfaltata e visto che avevamo entrambe paura dell'acqua attraversammo il ponte e camminammo sulla strada lungo il fiume.
Quasi non ci accorgemmo che era giunta la notte; improvvisamente una luna gigante si era insinuata sopra di noi e le stelle avevano intessuto trame comprensibili solo agli dei. Montagne e panorama ormai erano solo sagome enormi e indistinte che ci rendevano, piccole com'eravamo, le uniche cose esistenti al mondo.
Camminammo lungo il fiume e poi lo abbandonammo, risalendo una montagna e scendendo dall'altro versante verso un villaggio. Non ero sicura se fosse il villaggio di Philani o no. Ci ero stata solo una volta prima di allora, e non ci ero nemmeno andata di persona. Mia madre ne aveva parlato in una delle sue storie prima che ci trasferissimo nella casa nuova, prima di rimpiazzare nostro padre, e noi, con Piedepuzzolente una settimana dopo.
Una volta scese dalla montagna e raggiunto lo strano villaggio, avremmo bussato alla prima porta con una luce accesa e avremmo dormito lì. Questo era il piano iniziale, ma aveva una pecca. Nei villaggi tutti conoscevano tutti. Ero sicura che a chiunque avessimo chiesto un riparo per la notte, anche se avessimo mentito e fornito nomi falsi, dicendogli che eravamo dirette al villaggio seguente ma qualcosa ci aveva trattenute, saremmo state riconosciute. O per avere le orecchie di mio nonno o il naso di mia madre o perché ci avevano visto da bambine, magari ci avevano persino sculacciate. Tutti dicevano che mia sorella aveva la fronte di mio nonno. Il piano era troppo rischioso.
Siamo vicine, dissi a mia sorella. Vicine a cosa, non lo sapevo. In ogni caso, stavamo procedendo, e sembrò come se avessimo raggiunto la nostra destinazione, che non era un luogo preciso. L'unica cosa importante era che ormai eravamo lontane da casa.
Non sapevamo dove avremmo dormito, cosa avremmo mangiato o come saremmo sopravvissute, ma tornare a casa non era un'opzione. Forse quando mia madre sarà morta, dissi, forse allora potremo tornare.
Attraversammo il villaggio di Philani – ancora non ero certa di quale villaggio fosse – mentre i cani abbaiavano contro di noi, o contro qualcos'altro, magari un palo che era lì da sempre. In un attimo, arrivammo ad un altro villaggio. Mia sorella smise di chiedermi perché stavamo andando via di casa. Mi stringeva la mano di tanto in tanto, e io facevo lo stesso.
Spesso, pensai di dire a mia sorella perché stavamo scappando di casa, ma non avrei potuto. Non sapevo da dove cominciare. Non c'era, e tutt'ora non c'è, un punto giusto da dove cominciare; la verità l'avrebbe distrutta.
Mia madre la preferiva intorpidita. Io preferivo avere una sorella. Una sorella che ride, che parla, che mi guarda negli occhi e piange e ride. Pensate ai riflessi che appaiono all'improvviso quando guardate l'acqua e la smuovete. È ciò che succede a mia sorella. Voglio dirle che ha un disturbo mentale che le rende impossibile distinguere la realtà dalla finzione.
Non vedevamo una singola luce. Erano tutti andati a dormire da un pezzo. Non avevamo idea di dove fossimo, ma sapevamo che avevamo raggiunto un altro villaggio. La luna era scomparsa e le stelle ormai erano solo puntini nel cielo. La mattina era vicina, pensai, e lo dissi a mia sorella che annuì e sorrise.
Non avevamo idea di che ora fosse, ma avevamo lasciato casa da molto tempo, e ci facevano male i piedi. Decidemmo di dormire sotto un albero, di svegliarci quando fosse sorto il sole e rimetterci in cammino, verso qualcosa.

Source text - English Non si vive a lungo per scelta, è un caso Non sappiamo nemmeno in che condizioni arriveremo alla vecchiaia e se ne varrà la pena.
Quando abbiamo conosciuto Giuseppe “Peppe” Ottaviani stavamo vivendo un momento drammatico. Una persona importante, un amico, dopo una lunga malattia ci stava lasciando. L’avvicinarsi dell’epilogo e il lutto ci hanno portati ad affrontare il tema del rapporto tra individuo, comunità e Tempo, il problema del senso di sé e delle proprie azioni di fronte all’altro e alla finitezza dell’esistenza.
Giuseppe, attraversando oltre un secolo, ha viaggiato nel Tempo. Come Ulisse, con la sua insaziabile curiosità, ha voluto guardare dietro il velo dell’apparenza in cerca del senso dell’esistenza. E come l’eroe omerico, giunto in prossimità della fine di questo lungo viaggio solitario, ha rischiato di perdersi.
Anche se il protagonista di questo documentario è un anziano, questo non è un documentario sulla memoria. Non nasce dall’intento di salvare frammenti di racconto dall’oblio del Tempo.
È la storia di come oggi un uomo alla soglia dei 100 anni affronta la più grande e drammatica domanda della vita: che senso ha l’esistenza?
Una ricerca resa drammatica dall’urgenza dell’età e ostacolata da come in generale la società concepisce l’invecchiamento.
L’ANZIANO NEGATO
Le performance sportive di Giuseppe sono una dichiarazione forte e senza compromessi di appartenere a pieno titolo al presente, sono lo strumento per allontanare da sé la definizione di vecchio. Si proclama “il meno giovane”, anziano, ci ha spiegato, è chi non ha più un progetto, non è più autonomo e si lascia mettere da parte dalla società.
Siamo abituati a motivare le nostre azioni come investimento per benefici futuri, è quindi difficile immaginare che abbia senso avere un progetto se il tempo a disposizione è incerto. Una convinzione talmente radicata, che il giudizio di fronte ad anziani che provano a godersi la vita, è che sia egoismo o vuota vanità.
La perdita di autonomia è perdita di individualità, di autodeterminazione e di valore per se stessi.
Senza un progetto, senza l’autonomia la persona lascia che la società la metta da parte.
In via precauzionale nel suo interesse. Perché non diventi un peso, nell’interesse della famiglia. Per far “spazio”, nell’interesse economico e generazionale.
Nelle metafore la terza età è la stagione del raccolto, un periodo sereno e dolce. Ma in una società in cui il valore è dato dalla capacità produttiva, persone costrette all’inattività diventano un problema di carattere economico ed organizzativo.
Poco prima di sfidare Peppe nei 60 metri, Charles Eugster, atleta di 97 anni, ci ha avvertito che “costringere all’inattività così tante persone porterà ad una catastrofe economica, abbiamo frainteso completamente il concetto di invecchiamento, siamo completamente frastornati sull'argomento. Non lo sappiamo affrontare” e da inglese pragmatico ha aggiunto “è dal momento in cui nasciamo, che cominciamo ad invecchiare…”.
Ripensare l’invecchiamento significa offrirsi una prospettiva differente. Giuseppe ha iniziato l’attività sportiva dopo i 70 anni e ha concepito per sé un nuovo progetto vicino ai 100. L’aspettativa e la qualità di vita stanno aumentando esponenzialmente, le generazioni attuali di 70/80enni nulla hanno a che fare con quelle del passato. Giuseppe è ancora un’eccezione, e quello che fa sfiora l’impossibile. Ma il suo esempio ci offre l’opportunità di riappropriarci del presente e, vivendo con meno urgenza il futuro, rifiutare l’idea che ad un certo punto della vita sia semplicemente “troppo tardi”. L’età non è una colpa.

When we met Giuseppe "Peppe" Ottaviani, we were experiencing a dramatic period in our lives. A person important to us, a friend, was leaving us after a long illness. The path to the ending and the mourning led us to face the relationship between the individual, the community and Time. We analysed the reasons behind life and behind one's actions towards the other in relation with man's finite existence on earth.
Giuseppe, by crossing a century and above, travelled through time. Just as Ulysses, led by insatiable curiosity, he crossed the veil of appearance in his search for a meaning to existence. As him again, approaching the end of this long, solitary journey, he risked losing himself.
Even though the main character of the documentary is an old man, this is not a documentary about remembrance. It was not conceived to save fragments of history from oblivion.
It relates the story of a man that today, approaching his 100th birthday, must face the greatest question of life: What's the meaning of existence?
His very own age and society's ideal of aging are the biggest obstacles lying on the path to the truth.
THE ELDER DEPRIVED
Giuseppe's athletic performances are a clear and uncompromised declaration of being still and fully part of the present. They also are for him a means to take distance from the definition of "old man". He proclaims himself "the less young". Old, to him, are those who lose autonomy and interest in life. Those who allow society to put them aside.
We are used to motivating our choices as an investment for the future. For this reason, understanding the reasons of making projects on such an uncertain timeframe is hard. Such a rooted belief leads to finding those elders who keep trying to enjoy their lives guilty of egoism and hollow vanity.
A loss of autonomy is to the elder a loss of distinctiveness, self-determination and worthiness.
Without autonomy and a project, it's easy to be put aside by society.
In his best interest, as a precautionary measure. In his family's interest, to prevent him from becoming a burden to others. In a broader economic and generational interest, to make room for future generations.
Third age is often a metaphor for the harvest season, a calm and placid time. Yet, in a society that values productivity more than anything else, those forced to inactivity become an economic and organisational problem.
Right before facing Peppe in the 60 metres, athlete Charles Eugster, 97, told us that "forcing so many people to inactivity will lead to severe economic consequences. We totally mistook the very concept of aging, we are totally bewildered by it. We are unable to face it." And with the usual British pragmatism he added: "We start aging right after we are born."
Rethinking aging means giving ourselves a different prospective. Giuseppe started athletic activity in his seventies, and when he was approaching his 100th birthday he conceived a new project for himself. Life expectancy and the quality of life are improving exponentially, being seventy or eighty today is completely different from how it was in the past. Yet, Giuseppe is still an exception, what he does is nearly impossible. In any case, his example allows us to take back for ourselves the present, abandoning our fear of the future. It means dismissing the idea that somewhere in our life it suddenly becomes "too late" for anything. Age is not a fault.
His story will not make all of us live 100 years, but it tells us that we can and must choose how to use the time we are given, may it be short or long.

Source text - Spanish This emergency response guide is designed to help Seminaries and Institutes of Religion (S&I) workers protect, preserve, and promote the safety, health, and well-being of all of our students, faculty, staff, and visitors and to protect and preserve the resources of the Church. It also provides information on what to do during an incident, actual emergency, and its aftermath. This guide should be used for inservice training before an incident or emergency occurs.
An incident is defined as any event or circumstance which leads to unintended and/or unnecessary harm including an accident, injury, criminal act against persons or property, damage or loss of equipment, or property damage connected with S&I. In programs with multiple personnel, an employee should be assigned to be responsible for safety matters (at single person programs, it is the employee at the program). In preparation for an emergency situation, the assigned employee should do the following:
Create a safety and emergency plan for the S&I facility.
Ensure that teachers and staff receive regular training on safety matters (at single person programs, training on safety matters should be reviewed regularly).
Ensure that the safety and emergency plan is updated at least yearly and distributed to all personnel. This plan should include updating the telephone numbers on the “Emergency Information” page of this guide
Media Involvement
In most areas the media are aware of emergency calls and may come to investigate.
Church buildings are not public property. You may deny the media access.
When dealing with the media, remember to protect the privacy rights of all persons involved.
Whenever possible, defer media questions to civil authorities on the scene.
Remember that saying “I don’t know” may be your best answer. It is least likely to be misquoted.
Translation - Italian Questa guida per la risposta alle emergenze è stata ideata per aiutare i dipendenti di Seminari e Istituti di Religione (S&I) a proteggere, preservare e promuovere la sicurezza, la salute e il benessere di tutti gli studenti, del corpo insegnante, dello staff e dei visitatori e per proteggere e preservare i beni della Chiesa. La guida fornisce anche informazioni su come comportarsi in caso di evento dannoso, emergenza reale e relative conseguenze. Questa guida deve essere usata per l’addestramento sul lavoro prima che si verifichi un evento dannoso o un’emergenza.
Il termine evento dannoso include qualsiasi evento o circostanza che porti a danni non intenzionali e/o non necessari. Ciò include incidenti, lesioni, atti criminali contro la persona o la proprietà, danni o perdita di apparecchiature o danni alla proprietà connessi agli S&I.
