Following a 3-hour interruption of my cable internet connection this afternoon, I switched to the backup ADSL connection.

I then re-booted my PC only to find that my SDL Trados 2015 application would no longer work, giving the "License Expired" error message. I was surprised, but did not think that this activation issue could be related to my using a different internet connection on the same machine.

However, when the (faster) cable internet connection came back online, suddenly Studio was working normally again. This leads me to the conclusion that a change of IP address affected the license activation.

For me, this raises the following questions:

1) Is this how the licensing activation works now, and is this a change since the 2015 upgrade?
2) If so, is it ethical for software publishers in general to prevent paying customers from using the same application on the same desktop PC simply because the user switches to another internet connection for perfectly legitimate technical reasons?
3) Has anyone else had the same experience?

I'd be interested to hear any views and comments on this subject and whether others have had similar experiences and, if so, is there any kind of workaround?

Very strange Nov 18, 2015

I really hope this is not by intent, as it would prevent users to install Studio on their laptop and take it with them on business trips to work while abroad for instance.

And after all, Windows doesn't stop working just because the IP address changes. It may be you have to check with SDL, in case they are not aware of this behaviour. Being locked to one Internet provider can't be correct.

I don't think that this is related to the IP address Nov 18, 2015

Paul

I am quite sure that the activation does not depend on the IP address as I have been using Studio on my notebook in various places connected through varying Wi-Fi networks and never faced any problem.

I guess that the cause has nothing to do with the connection at all and was caused by some other circumstance because Studio does not check online constantly whether your license is still valid. Otherwise you would not be able to work offline, which you can.

Strange indeed! Nov 18, 2015

Thank you for your input Roy and Walter.

I agree with you that it's strange. I'm at a complete loss to understand this.

On the one hand it seems so unlikely that recognition of the license would depend on the IP address, since clearly that would be a major handicap for mobile devices. As far as I'm aware, nobody has reported any such issue - but on the other hand I can't understand why in my particular case the software works on one internet connection and not on the o

I did contact SDL Support about the "License Expired" message before I realized that the application would work again on the original internet connection and I'm still waiting for a reply.

Maybe there's something else going on here that I'm missing. It would be interesting to hear whether anyone else has ever had anything similar happen.

Issue resolved Nov 19, 2015

All's well that ends well.

I've been in touch with SDL Support and the application now works on both Internet connections.

I still don't understand what happened here. The issue must have somehow been related to my specific installation.

The mysteries of computing!
