I am Irish and living in Spain, so I like to go back to Ireland every couple of months to catch up with friends and family. In those cases, I always bring my laptop and work pretty normally from Monday to Friday.

However, when I go away for summer, Christmas and Easter holidays, I don't bring my laptop as those are my holidays away from work!

for regular customers only Jan 25, 2010

I have a few regular assignments with fixed publishing/print dates (monthly/bi-monthly). As these customers are unable to adjust their print/publication schedules to my holidays, I usually take a laptop for these jobs. I do not take any additional work while I am on holiday, though and I try to fit my holidays in between the publication dates whenever it is possible.

My office = my laptop Jan 25, 2010

While I prefer to be sitting in the right kind of chair in front of a larger screen etc etc, my lifestyle means I have to translate all over the place.

Right now I'm keeping my husband company while he recovers from an operation for a broken leg. And hats off to the person who installed wifi in the hospital here!

my laptop is one of my kids Jan 25, 2010

I move from my home to my parents home, to and fro. I take my kids, their bag, and my laptop. I never leave it behind even if I travel away. I might not take additional work, but have to take care of my regular clients. Also, why not try working outdoors for a change.

But how do you ensure the security of the data when you translate everywhere? Most public WIFI hotspots are not secure, people might simply stand behind you and see your computer screen, the laptop and the data on it could be stolen...

I claim to be available 24/7 and I try to live up to it...
I usually go back to UK for a couple of weeks at Xmas, but my clients in Spain only have one or two days off at that time of year so I always take my old laptop with me. This year, for example, someone sent me a job on Xmas day and another client did the same on New Year's Eve!

It also comes in handy if your flight is delayed, you can pass the time doing a bit of work, or watch a movie, play games, etc.

BTW as I'm no James Bond, I don't worry about security all that much, since normally the standard precautions work fine for me.

I have down-sized and take my netbook with me! Jan 25, 2010

I love my 10" MSI Wind. It's more portable than my laptop, which is broken at the moment, anyway!

I have laptop for my day job, but can't access Wi-fi with it, so I can't do much on it away from the office.
