AI AND MACHINE OUTPUT: THE HUMAN LAYER

Evaluation and quality scoring. I assess machine and AI-generated Indonesian the way I assess human work: register, naturalness, terminology consistency, and whether a sentence achieves what the source intended. Certified in post-editing, with ongoing LQA engagements covering error categorisation and in-context review.

What AI gets wrong in Indonesian. Output is usually fluent and quietly wrong. Register pitched too formal for a consumer audience. Calques that are grammatical but that no Indonesian would say. Terminology that drifts halfway through a project. Honorifics and levels of politeness applied without regard to who is speaking to whom. Finding these takes a native reader with an editorial background, not a checker.

Working alongside the tools. I use ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity daily for research, terminology and consistency work. They make my process better. They do not make the judgement, and I do not price my work as though they did.

I am a native Indonesian linguist based near Chicago, Illinois, working from English, French and Malay into Indonesian, and from Indonesian and Malay into English. My work covers marketing transcreation, website and software localization, subtitling, corporate training material, and linguistic quality assurance.

Most of what I do is not word replacement. It is judgement: deciding what a sentence is trying to achieve, and finding the version of it that achieves the same thing for an Indonesian reader. That is the part machines still cannot do reliably, and it is where I spend my time.

What I work on

Marketing and transcreation. Advertising copy, brand messaging and campaign material, including transcreation and text control for luxury watches, jewellery, leather goods, and consumer electronics.

Software, app and website localization. Interface strings, help content and store listings across dozens of iOS and Android titles, plus website localization projects in travel and hotel booking, finance, recruitment, e-commerce and industrial equipment. I own both iOS and Android devices and test in context rather than in a spreadsheet.

Linguistic quality assurance and evaluation. Ongoing LQA for a leading software platform and for a major mobile phone manufacturer: scoring, error categorisation, terminology consistency and in-context review. I also contributed to the collection, creation and review of Indonesian language proficiency test material across ILR levels 1 to 4+.

AI output evaluation and post-editing. Certified in post-editing, and working daily with generative AI tools. Machine and AI-generated Indonesian is often fluent and quietly wrong: register that is too formal for a consumer audience, calques that no Indonesian would say, terminology that drifts across a project. My work is judging that output honestly and repairing it, not competing with it.

Corporate, technical and financial. Training programmes and compliance material including HR systems, workplace safety, shipping and freight, and codes of conduct. Technical work in marine coatings, offshore safety procedure, bridge navigation systems and mining equipment. Financial and economic material including central bank information content and academic executive summaries.

Subtitling and publishing. Television drama, e-learning and corporate video. Book-length work including a translated novel, and my own published memoir.

Certified documents. Birth, marriage and death certificates, diplomas, academic records and citizenship documents for use in the United States and Indonesia.

Why clients keep coming back

An editor before a translator. Seven years on the editorial staff of a Disney weekly magazine at Indonesia's largest publishing group. That training is why my copy reads as writing rather than as translation, and why I catch what a spell checker cannot.

Based in US Central Time. Work sent at the end of a New York or London day is being worked on immediately, not waiting for Jakarta to wake up. For urgent turnarounds this often decides the schedule.

Two cultures, both current. Thirty-two years living in Indonesia, and years since then living and working in the United States. I keep my Indonesian current daily through Indonesian media and through the Association of Indonesian Translators, and my English is shaped by living inside it.
