I used to love the hammam (Turkish steam bath) but a health condition means it's no longer safe for me.

So I don't do anything on that list.

If I want to pamper myself I will eat some chocolate (NB I didn't finish my chocolate yesterday despite getting through all my bills), go to the cinema or pay to watch a film on my list of must-sees,

I do like a massage, but rarely if ever have time to get one.

Does taking a long walk in the mountains or in the woods, where my phone has absolutely zero signal, count?

No wellness/spa for me, thank you! Mar 1

I did sauna once and it doesn’t suit me, I felt quite unwell: dizziness, nausea and strong headaches. Never again! Like Kay, a good dark chocolate does the trick for me!

None of that Mar 1

I am absolutely not a fan of the classical wellness offerings. I do like to take a swim in actual, unchlorinated bodies of water, but lakes where one can actually go for a swim without risking at least a rash are extremely rare in my corner of Germany, and the few that exist actually charge exorbitant parking fees.
So, basically, I stick to long walks/short hikes, for which my corner of Germany is excellent, and I also treat playing video games as quality relaxing time.

Swimming Mar 1

Swimming in a lake or a river (the ocean isn't always available/nearby) does a lot of good both for the body and the mind. When it's followed by a nice cup of coffee or hot chocolate, then this is all the wellness/pampering I need.

What a sexist set of options! Mar 1

Most men will pamper themselves in very different ways. (And many women, obviously, before I start getting accusations.)

Other Mar 1

I do take spa holidays at least a few times a year (with various saunas and pools, I am not a great fan of massages and procedures although those are fine too sometimes), but there are plenty of other ways how I usually pamper myself. Just walks in nature, slow mornings, having a good meal and wine, traveling, going to a concert, reading a book... Anything I enjoy doing without stress or distractions is pampering.

My fav Mar 1

My fav on the list is thai yoga, they also call it lazy yoga. It’s the only type of massage that’s done fully clothed. Very few good therapists though, it’s very physically demanding for the therapist.

I don’t like chorinated pools either, ie. my skin doesn’t like them. So I found one spa pool that contains a mixture of thermal and tap water and very little chlorine, it actually makes my skin soft and I sometimes use it in the winter. It’s also very relaxing.

Interesting replies, I also enjoy long walks, cycling, chocolate and coffee!

Hiking Mar 1

I'm an avid hiker. Hiking is my wellness, my therapy and my passion (I'm full of hiking plans that I will probably never realize).

I will never have the time and/or money to do it, but if I could I would hike the entire world.

The tradition started in 2003. 2 Shuttle flights a year meant 9-10 8-hour night shifts in a row at the Mission Control Center. ISS crews live by Greenwich time and get up just past midnight Houston time. We all have our fair share... After those fantastic, super exciting, unforgettable but brutal nights with a lot of RF noise burning your ears I would catch a flight and in less than 2 hours (at times 180 dollars for a round-trip in the previous life:-) ) find myself on a Mexican beach, in a good safe resort with guaranteed shaded lounge chairs for everyone. After check-in I would say no more than 1000 words over a 5-6 day stay, meet Caribbean sunrise at ~7:15 am every morning, read, swim and drink chilled white wine starting no later than 8 am after the first dip. A glass of red wine before early bedtime is not prohibited as well. Over the first 5-6 trips I drove to the ruins, snorkeled, did deep-sea fishing, visited parks and underground cenotes. Later it turned into a pure vegetation on the beach, possible only with at least 8 hours of some great day/evening reading. My Kindle is always packed anew, factoring in a slim chance that I could drop one of the trial books after the first 30-50 pages. I do it less often now but expanded my geography to Hawaii, Fiji Island, Belize etc. Of course, hundreds of thousands of airline and hotel bonus points and statuses, which have been continuously accumulating over 20+ years of extensive global business travel, played an absolutely decisive role in making this lavish lifestyle affordable for me but I've always made enough for Mexico and an unpaid week. Interpretation can be a fantastic career with the benefits of its own without any help from corporate cubicles. Oh, my carbon print... Peter shall never open the gates for me

Saunas in the US, unless run by Russians or Koreans, are a pathetic joke with not just zero but negative culture of using it. So are the massages, face or body, most of the time - ridiculously expensive, making a full course of, say, ten pretty much price-prohibitive, especially when you think of a huge risk of getting a poorly done job and irritation instead of relaxation. Again, finding a real Thai or Chinese specialist is your best bet here. I miss it but save this pleasure for the other parts of the world.

On a smaller scale - lunches with friends, another glass of wine, beauty sleep and full-scale sessions of treating and reviving my face, hair and body at home, walking when the season permits, Museum of Fine Arts when a new exhibition arrives. I cook 80% of my meals from scratch with fresh ingredients but make it simple most of the time. Certain complicated ethnic dishes of all origins can be a rare treat now and then. An urge to switch from work to some completely unrelated and enjoyable activity serves as a great push.
