There really should be an "all of the above" option. I mean, clearly, I use the internet to market my services (plus I have other business matters online), and to communicate with clients (e-mail/chat), and as a research tool (term search on proz is one of my best resources!), to communicate with colleagues through professional lists and groups on yahoo and google groups, etc, and, I also ha... I mostly use the Internet for work and sending emails. It's also useful for finding TV series and documentaries in the original version, which for me is literally the only chance I have most days to hear English spoken, but I won't go into too much detail about my love for emule The truth is by the end of the day my eyes are so tired from looking at the screen that I'd rather find something else to do, so I... At the moment, I don't have a TV, so I use the internet for everything: work, e-mails, research, surfing, news, TV (Hulu.com), watching movies, shopping, listening to radio and music, chatting, Skype and Call2 phoning, etc., etc...I could go on and on. | | | Research/work and e-mail equally | Oct 9, 2008 |

I'm sure younger translators take the Internet for granted and can´t actually imagine working without it | | | Could we live without it now?? | Oct 9, 2008 |
Cecilia Falk wrote: Can't help but wonder how on earth I managed to work as a translator back in 1988 without Internet! Cecilia I can't even remember how I managed LIFE without it, let alone work! (I was 16 when I surfed the net for the first time, so I did know life without it. I've never known work without it, though!) | |

If I was honest I probably use it more for browsing than anything, but I'd have to make some big changes to how I work and live if I didn't have e-mail, skype and internet termbases. As it is, I can spend months at a time living wherever I choose, then visit various family members for a few weeks, then go home to sort out the garden and still manage to keep myself employed and busy with clients using the same phone number and email address to contact me in Barmouth and Buenos Aires. For work, the Internet is a research tool, and one which I don't think I could live without! I also use it for emails of course, marketing myself, business networking, online banking, etc... In my free time, I use the Internet for shopping (this is a dangerously expensive hobby!), networking and watching videos/TV programmes. I also read the newspaper online rather than buying a paper copy. | | | Sheila Wilson Spain Local time: 13:19 Member (2007) English + ... When did you last go to a bookshop, travel agent, bank, ...? | Oct 9, 2008 |
I order all books, holidays, presents etc over the internet and I don't actually have a bank to visit except online. I've happily been able to cut out estate agents too, having today received an offer on my house advertised on the web. I suppose I should worry about shopkeepers etc losing their jobs, but we all have to change with the times. My daughter saw the opportunities it provided and gave up her job to open an internet-only gift store that's going very well. | | | USER0059 (X) Finland Local time: 15:19 English to Finnish + ... For me, emailing, browsing and blogging is work. Before I gave up on chatting, that was work as well. These polls are fun, but if the questions were thought through, they might also be useful. | | | Pages in topic: [1 2] > | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: What do you use the Internet for mostly?
